Unyielding bow

“Mstislav Rostropovich: The Indomitable Bow” was directed by French musician and producer Bruno Monsaingeon , and jointly completed by France, Germany, Russia, and the United States in 2018. This documentary records the life Mstislav Rostropovich (1927 – 2007), one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century.

If you are a music lover, especially a string lover, this movie is undoubtedly your most precious gift. If you have only a general liking for music, but you have a strong interest in the human spirit, this movie will also benefit you.

We all know that in the eighteenth century there was a god of violin, Niccolo Paganini (1782-1840), because of the impenetrable wall of history, we can only know him and feel him from literature. Rostropovich can be called the god of cello in the human history until now ("I think maybe because I saw him, I began to believe in God." ― Conductor Seiji Ozawa), but we breathed with him the air of the same world, and modern media allow us to get up close and personal with this great man, as this film does.

His value has surpassed the scope of playing cello and conducting music. His talent, character and experience make people see and appreciate him from a higher level.

Born and raised in the socialist Soviet Union, how did Rostropovich endear himself to the world?

He said: "When I was studying at the Moscow Conservatory, they taught me Marxism-Leninism, which said that the soul does not exist, there is only the material world. But matter is doomed to perish, and what is created by human talent will remain. I don’t understand, Beethoven, Mozart, and Bach are all dead, but in my heart they are still alive, just in different forms.” Below is the link to the movie. About 1 hour and 20 minutes of spiritual tourism must be a worthwhile trip.
